It is certainly obvious since you dropped into this section of my Website that I am a devout fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000. I filled much of my share of cyberspace with images and text worshiping and admiring the show and all its wonders. To you it may be pictures of goofy props and costumes and puppets made of toys. For myself and the vast number of hard-core fans (MSTies), these images are the stain glass windows in our church of comedy. Eden Prairie MN is the Mecca, the holy land of Best Brains, Inc; the fine ladies and gents responsible for bringing a cow-town puppet show to life.
I am a MSTie, true-to-form. I never miss the debut of a new episode and I watch the re-runs every time they air. I have a video collection, and I aspire to own a copy of every single episode ever aired. I have the inborn desire to be a bot builder, so that I may have the physical representations of Crow T. Robot, and Tom Servo, true-to-form sci-fi icons. I sing along with my Clowns in the Sky CD’s and I enjoy a Patrick Swayze Christmas even in September. Yes, I’m obsessed, but I love being this way!
I became a fan several years ago, 1993 to be exact. I remember clearly my first encounter with MST3K. It was mid-summer, and I was staying at my Aunt’s house for a few days. I was up one night watching TV when I found a space movie. Now, I’ve always carried a special interest in space exploration, an offshoot of the Challenger disaster, which captured my attention so many years ago. Anyway, it took me a little bit to notice that there were three silhouettes at the bottom of the screen and they were talking! What’s this (in true Batman fashion) I ask myself? Well, it turns out that two odd, but cute, robots flanked a sleepy-eyed man were making jokes as the movie went along. I was instantly captivated by this concept, and I was laughing all the way.
The following night I was flipping through the channels again, and I was able to watch my first complete Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode, Being From Another Planet. I was hooked. Ever since then, I have watched the show religiously. I caught up with seasons two and three during the off seasons in re-runs and eagerly anticipated every new episode as Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank would send Joel another piece of cinematic trash.
Then, MSTies the world over were saddened to see, the show’s creator and host, Joel Hodgson, leave to pursue other projects. In his place stepped the mild-mannered head writer, Mike Nelson. We were unsure about Mike at first, but it didn’t take long before he won most of us over. Sure we missed Joel, but Mike brought a new personality and touch to the show. Today, new villains pursue Mike and he remains at the helm of the SOL as the show winds down to end after ten seasons. MST3K has quite a history and the best place to learn about it is from Satellite News.
I am sad to see MST3K leave the air waves, but I have fond memories of the show and I can relive it through all my tapes. On this website, I have several galleries of images. I have collected them here so that they won’t be lost. Many of them come from the Sci-fi channel’s site, which will remove its MST3K section sometime in the not too distant future. I have also picked images up from other fans and from memorabilia I have at home. I hope you enjoy browsing through my Mystery Science Theater 3000 website.
Now bow down and worship!
Push the button, Frank.
